| Q: |
Why am I having trouble printing some PDFs? |
| A: |
We have found that a corrupt printer driver may cause this problem. Try reinstalling your printer driver on your machine. |
| Q: |
What's a 500 server error? |
| A: |
When there is a glitch in the server you will receive this error. The server checks itself every minute and if it finds a problem it restarts. If you'll wait a few minutes and try your access again, the problem should clear itself up. |
| Q: |
I know of a directive, but I can't find it on Explorit or the Directives Checklist. How come? |
| A: |
There are four possible reasons you can't find the requested directive. Either the directive 1) does not exist, 2) has not been sent to Directives Management in MA-43 for formal entry into their system; therefore, they still do not consider it as existing, 3) it is a draft in MA-43's Revcom system, or 4) it was recently approved and should be provided to Explorit within 3 days of approval and placed on the next Directives Checklist. |
| Q: |
How often does Explorit receive a new version of the Directives Checklist? |
| A: |
Explorit receives a new Directives Checklist at the first of every month. |
| Q: |
Explorit indicates that there has been a change, but I don't find it noted on the first page. Where can I find it? |
| A: |
Sometimes a change is not noted on the first page of the directive, but on the actual page where the change has occurred. Please search for the change within the document (e.g., search for "chg 2"). |
| Q: |
What is RevCom, and what is it used for? |
| A: |
RevCom is short for the Department of Energy's Review and Comment System. This application allows users to review and make comments on DOE draft directives electronically via the Internet. The system was released for use by the entire DOE complex, in January 2000, including Headquarters (HQ), Field Elements, Labs, and Management and Operating (M&O) Contractors. RevCom is accessible at http://directives.doe.gov/rcLogin.html. RevCom is an evolving system which leverages database and Web technology. Upgrades to the system will be made periodically. Please browse RevCom's FAQ section for more information. |
| Q: |
How is RevCom different from the DOE Explorit System? |
| A: |
It is important to understand that RevCom and Explorit are two distinct systems with different functions. RevCom is a Web-based application specifically designed to allow users to review and make comments on DOE draft directives and only draft directives. RevCom links to Explorit at the individual document level enabling the user to view the pdf version of the draft directive posted to Explorit. Comments on a draft directive, however, may only be submitted via RevCom. |
| Q: |
How can I be notified to learn about the availability of draft directives? |
| A: |
You may register with Explorit to receive automatic email "Alerts" whenever a new document is posted by DOE to Explorit. "Alert" notification is a valuable tool for anyone in DOE who has responsibility for directives review and/or implementation. To register for "Alerts," follow the instructions under the "Alerts" button on the Explorit Web page. |
| Q: |
Can I link directly to the PDF document? |
| A: |
You can access the PDF directly by creating a bookmark. Within your browser use the URL below for the type of directive you are requesting. You may browse these directories for correct file names.
http://www.directives.doe.gov/pdfs/doe/doetext/oldord/5400/o54001c1.pdf -- will bring up DOE O 5400.1 Chg 1
http://www.directives.doe.gov/pdfs/doe/doetext/neword/420/o4201c1.pdf -- will bring up DOE O 420.1 Chg 1 |
| Q: |
Can I link directly to a paragraph of a directive? |
| A: |
We are working on this. |
| Q: |
When does a draft directive get published? |
| A: |
Once all comments are returned to the directive writer concerning the draft document, there is a review period. The directive writer will take as long as needed to review all of your comments and all "major" issues must be resolved (e.g., safety & health or financial impact matters). The directive will not be published until all of these major issues are resolved. Therefore, there is no way of knowing exactly how long it will take to publish a directive. |
| Q: |
Why doesn't the first page of the PDF show the official heading used for directives? |
| A: |
There was a time when the first page was not done electronically but used a matting process. This process has been eliminated and all future directives should contain the official headings for all PDFs. |
| Q: |
Why do I need Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view the files? |
| A: |
All directives are available in text and in Portable Document Format (PDF) using Adobe's Acrobat Reader. We chose PDF because of its multi-platform and WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) capabilities. The PDF-writer allows us to convert the original file (directives are done in WordPerfect) to PDF and maintain the integrity of the document. It will look exactly like the hard copy. |
| Q: |
How do I get Adobe's Acrobat Reader? |
| A: |
Adobe's Acrobat Reader is free and can be downloaded from Adobe's Web-site. |
| Q: |
How are page changes handled? |
| A: |
Page changes are incorporated directly into the document. |
| Q: |
Who manages Explorit for the DOE? |
| A: |
Explorit is managed by the DOE Directives Management Team (DMTeam) in MA-43 at HQ, with technical support from Doxcelerate Corporation. The DMTeam point of contact for Explorit is Directives Management Team. |
| Q: |
How do I find out more about the DOE Directives System? |
| A: |
The DOE Directives System is the means by which DOE policies and requirements are developed and communicated throughout the DOE-wide complex. Directives include policy statements, orders, notices, manuals, and guides. DOE Policy 251.1, Directives System, DOE Order 251.1A, Directives System, and the accompanying Manual 251.1-1A, Directives System Manual, or any revisions thereto, describe DOE's process and procedures for developing and issuing DOE directives.
You can also contact your site's Directives Point of Contact for information. Some DPCs maintain site-specific documentation, such as procedures or guidelines, pertaining to DOE directives that provide additional background information of use to you.
